How To Work From Home Efficiently

With everything going on, a lot of companies and businesses are having employees work from home. If you aren't accustomed to working at home, it can be a challenge to keep yourself on a schedule and setting boundaries between work life and home life.

Here are a few tips to help you get your work done even if it's not at the office.

Set the Scene

At the office, everyone has their own designated area. So why should working at home be any different? Making your own workspace is pivotal in being productive. So, make sure to have your set-up in an area where distractions are limited, and you have enough room to not feel crowded. If you have the opportunity to set-up your work space near a window, that's one thing I would highly recommend.

Stick to a routine

Just like work, you have a routine to get up and get ready for work every morning. When working from home, I would encourage you to do what you normally would. Wake up, get ready, make your morning coffee and get started on your work. When it comes to breaks you would normally take at the office, make sure to follow through on those at home as well. Take your lunch break and small 10-minute breaks as a refresher throughout the day. And while this is your chance to work in your pajamas like you've always wanted, make sure to change your clothes from day-to-day like you normally would so you avoid getting into a funk.

Make a plan

It's easy to get sidetracked and distracted while at home, so making a plan and sticking to it can help you to stay productive. Plan out the work you have and decide by what time of the day you would like to complete it, so you stay on track just like you normally would while being at the office.
Have to-do lists and as the day progresses check off what you have already completed to get the day moving forward.

Avoid getting sidetracked!

I get it. You're in the comfort of your own home with access to Netflix, your pets and unlimited snacks. But while it all sounds tempting, spiraling into that can set you off track and put you behind on all the work that needs to be done. It is so easy to watch some Netflix while you enjoy your lunch hour, but just like you would at the office, be wary of the time. Set a timer if you must, to ensure you don't get stuck binge watching a whole season of Game of Thrones.

Set work hours

Like I mentioned before, separating work life from home life is essential in making sure you don't get tunnel vision of being at home so often. So set hours for yourself of when you should be working and know when to stop for the day. This is when your time-management skills are crucial.

Taking Breaks

By allowing yourself to take appropriate breaks, it will help you stay productive and feel refreshed. Taking some time to go outside and get some fresh air will be necessary especially if you are alone indoors all day. It can also help with your mental health if you are not usually a work-from-home employee.

Whether you have already been a full-time work-from-home employee or because of recent circumstance have just now adapted to working from home, I hope these tips help you ease into accomplishing a normal work day.
